Our view on BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food)
Preparing a raw diet yourself (BARF) can be a great feeding method, provided it is done with extreme precision and expert knowledge. A balanced BARF diet requires exact proportions and the addition of essential vitamins and minerals. Doing this correctly requires significant time, knowledge, and dedication, and is often more costly than feeding a premium quality dry kibble.
In practice, we unfortunately often see crucial nutrients being omitted due to a lack of knowledge. The long-term consequences of nutritional deficiencies can be severe, potentially leading to serious health issues involving the heart, skeleton, and joints. Additionally, handling raw meat carries risks of bacterial contamination for both the dog and the owner.
Our advice: To avoid these risks, we are cautious about recommending a DIY BARF diet. If you prefer feeding raw meat, we advise choosing high-quality Complete Commercial Raw (often referred to as KVV or Complete Frozen Raw). Reputable brands ensure all necessary nutrients are correctly balanced so you can be confident your dog isn’t missing anything.
We are always happy to advise you on the best nutrition for your puppy!
