Epilepsy in the Australian Kelpie
Epilepsy also occurs in the Australian Kelpie. It appears to be somewhat more common in working lines than in show lines (Australian Show Kelpie). However, because both lines share the same origins and are frequently interbred, it likely occurs in both groups. Fortunately, epilepsy in the Kelpie is far less common and less severe than in certain other dog breeds.
Because the exact mode of inheritance remains unclear and the condition can skip generations, it remains challenging to eliminate epilepsy entirely through breeding.
What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is caused by temporary abnormal electrical activity in the brain, resulting in a seizure. Approximately 1 to 2% of all dogs experience epilepsy at some point. Seizures are broadly categorized into two main forms:
Generalized seizure (classic fit):
Both brain hemispheres are involved. The dog loses consciousness, falls on its side, turns rigid, and typically makes padding or convulsing movements with its legs. The dog may also salivate, vocalize, or lose bladder and bowel control.
Focal seizure (partial fit):
Only a small part of the brain is affected. This often presents as localized muscle twitches, fly-snapping movements in the air, or sudden episodes of altered behavior. The dog does not always lose full consciousness.
The Three Phases of a Seizure
A classic epileptic seizure typically progresses through three distinct phases:
Before the seizure (Prodrome): The dog exhibits behavioral changes, such as restlessness, anxiety, seeking extra attention, or pacing. This phase can last from minutes to hours.
The seizure itself (Ictus): The dog collapses, stiffens, undergoes involuntary muscle contractions, and loses consciousness. This usually lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes.
After the seizure (Post-ictal phase): The dog regains consciousness but may appear disoriented, lethargic, unsteady, or temporarily blind. Recovery can take anywhere from minutes to several days.
Emergency Situations
Important: If a dog experiences multiple seizures in short succession (clustering) or if a single seizure lasts longer than 5 to 15 minutes (status epilepticus), this constitutes a life-threatening medical emergency. Contact a veterinarian immediately!
Causes & Classification
Veterinarians generally categorize canine epilepsy into two main types:
Idiopathic / Genetic Epilepsy:
No structural brain lesion or underlying disease is present. The predisposition is inherited. The first seizure typically occurs between 6 months and 5 years of age. Between seizures, the dog is completely healthy.
Reactive / Secondary Epilepsy:
Seizures are triggered by an external or structural cause, such as brain trauma, a tumor, toxicity, or systemic metabolic disorders (e.g., liver or kidney failure).
