Heart Health in the Australian Kelpie
In the past, heart health—specifically mitral valve degeneration—was a frequently discussed topic within the Kelpie community. Over the years, further insights and practical experience have provided a much clearer and more realistic perspective.
Athletic Heart vs. Heart Disease
The Kelpie is an active working breed. Due to their high athletic drive, many Kelpies naturally develop an “athletic heart” (an enlarged, strong heart built for endurance). This is a normal physical adaptation, not a cardiac disease.
Aging and Senior Dogs
Just like humans, a dog’s body and heart valves show wear and tear as they age. It is quite common for senior dogs (10+ years) to develop a mild heart murmur. In the vast majority of cases, this does not affect their quality of life, and elderly dogs pass away from natural old age rather than heart failure.
When does it matter?
A heart murmur in a young dog (under 5 years of age) is unusual and warrants further veterinary investigation. Severe conditions such as DCM (Dilated Cardiomyopathy) are extremely rare or virtually non-existent in the breed.

We closely monitor the health of our dogs and offspring. By distinguishing between normal aging, athletic conditioning, and actual health issues, we maintain a healthy breeding program grounded in common sense rather than panic.
